Stewart's Rose Manor Funeral Service was founded by the late Mr. John R. Stewart and has served the greater Richmond area for more than 5O years. During the late 1960's, Mr. John R. Stewart became the sole proprietor. Rose Manor is the only independent African American owned and operated mortuary in West Contra Costa County. Rose Manor's sole principle is based on providing complete and dignified services at a competitive price.
Mr. John Stewart was a respected community leader and committed to service. He supported the development of churches, businesses, and the community. He sponsored the local Baseball Little League, encouraging youngsters to excel. Mr. Stewart was affiliated with several professional and social organizations. Among his affiliations were:
- The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (of which he was a life member)
- Both the National and California Funeral Director's and Embalmer's Associations where he served as President for both organizations
- 33rd Degree Mason
- A Member of the Victoria Consistory #35 of Oakland, California
- A Member of the Menelik Temple' #36 Order of Shriners
- A Member of the International Rotary of Richmond, California; the Black Business and Professional Men's Organization
- Served as Board Member for the Richmond Chamber of Commerce.
- Received a Certificate of Honor as a Richmond Pioneer from the City of Richmond in 2006.
In honor of her father's memory, Ms. Lydia Stewart continues the legacy. She currently owns and operates Stewart's Rose Manor Funeral Service, adhering to the standard of excellence established by her late father.
